About estimated steps and calories
Steps are calculated from BPM and timer duration, not measured by a device sensor. Weight, duration, tempo and sound settings are saved in this browser. The settings feature does not send these values to a server. On a shared device, use Restore default settings after use.
Estimated calories (including resting energy) = METs × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200 × minutes. The app provisionally assigns 2.8 / 3.8 / 4.5 METs to 90 / 120 / 180 BPM.
Walking activities in the 2024 Adult Compendium provide reference values for slow walking (2.8), ordinary walking (3.8) and marching (4.5). This mapping is an app-specific approximation. BPM does not determine the METs of marching in place; actual energy use varies with knee height, arm movement and individual differences.

Make time to move at home
Want a movement break between chores or work, without getting ready to go outside? Footstamp helps you march in place indoors. Just open your phone browser. No special exercise equipment or app installation is needed.
Alternating paw prints guide the rhythm, so you do not have to count the tempo or time yourself. This is a timer for making time to move at home, not a tool for evaluating weight loss. Calories are estimates and do not guarantee weight-loss results.
Try five minutes of marching in place
- Clear the floor and place your phone where you can see it easily.
- The defaults are 5 minutes and 90 BPM. Entering your weight changes the calorie estimate.
- Press Start, wait for the 3-second countdown, and follow the alternating paw prints.
- Press Pause to rest. Use Finish workout to stop early and see your results so far.
You can use the timer with sound off. Be mindful of footsteps and floor vibrations, especially in shared buildings, and choose a comfortable pace.
Back to the timer ↑Questions about marching in place and using Footstamp
How short can a workout be?
Choose a target of 5, 10 or 15 minutes. You can use Finish workout before five minutes, or continue beyond the target in count-up mode. These are timer options, not recommended exercise amounts.
Does my phone measure my steps?
No. Steps are calculated from timer duration and the selected tempo, not measured by sensors. Five minutes at 90 BPM corresponds to 450 steps. Pause the timer when you stop moving.
How accurate are the calories?
Calories are estimates based on your entered weight, timer duration and an assumed intensity (METs) for the selected tempo. The app does not measure movement or heart rate. Actual energy use varies with knee height, arm movement and individual differences. See About estimated steps and calories above for the formula and sources.
Is it free on my phone?
Yes. No account or installation is required. Use a phone or desktop browser. On phones, turn sound on or off in the app and adjust volume using your device controls. Your usual data charges may apply.
Are settings and workout history saved?
Weight, duration and tempo settings stay in this browser. Up to 365 finished workouts are stored with duration, calculated steps and estimated calories. View today's total, the last 7 days and the latest 30 workouts. There is no synchronization between devices. Clearing browser data or ending private browsing may erase them.
